For more than 100 years, Our Lady’s Nurses for the Poor – fondly known as the Brown Nurses – has performed a unique ministry of healthcare, advocacy and friendship for the sick poor and disadvantaged.

Australia’s ‘saint in waiting’, Eileen O’Connor, has been recognised as Servant of God by the Holy See.
10 October 2019. Archbishop Anthony Fisher OP issues an edict calling on Sydney Catholics to aid the Archdiocese with information for the cause of beatification and canonisation of Servant of God Eileen O’Connor, co-founder of Our Lady’s Nurses for the Poor.
28 September 2019: Bishop Anthony Randazzo launches Dr Jocelyn Hedley’s new book, Hidden in the Shadow of Love, which examines the life of Mother Theresa McLaughlin and the early years of Our Lady’s Nurses for the Poor.

4 November 2018. It is with deep sadness that Our Lady’s Nurses for the Poor has announced the death of Sister Kathleen Conlan, who died this week at St Joseph’s Aged Care Facility, Kensington, in the 74th year of religious life.
28 September 1918. Co-founder of Our Lady’s Nurses for the Poor, Captain Rev. Father Edward McGrath msc, is recommended for the Victoria Cross after rescuing a seriously-injured British Army officer from no-man’s land during an action on the Western Front.
10 September 1914. The world-famous singer, Miss Ella Caspers, headlines a concert held at Concordia Hall in Elizabeth Street, Sydney, in aid of Our Lady’s Nurses for the Poor.
30 August 1962. His Eminence Cardinal Norman Gilroy, approves a prayer for the beatification of Eileen O’Connor.
19 August 1977. The Grange Lions Club donates its sixth Chrysler Galant to Our Lady’s Home in Brisbane.
2 August 1951. The Catholic Weekly publishes this obituary for the Very Rev. Father Edward Gell, who was a generous benefactor and ardent supporter of Our Lady’s Nurses for the Poor throughout his long life.
