Leading the way

23 April 1953. The Catholic Weekly reports that more than 750,000 Sydney siders lined Bridge and Macquarie Streets to watch a procession marking the end of the Australian National Eucharistic Congress. Nearly 24,600 marchers took part in the solemn procession in honor of the Most Blessed Sacrament. Eight members of Our Lady’s Nurses for the Poor, dubbed ‘Australia’s newest religious congregation’, had the honour of leading a group of 430 sisters, who were marching in public procession for the first time in Australia’s history.
