1 January 1968. Rev. Mother Agnes (May) McGahey is made a Member of the Order of the British Empire for outstanding service to the sick and poor. The investiture takes place at NSW Government House on 19 April 1968. Mother McGahey accepts this prestigious recognition on behalf of her sister companions at Our Lady’s Nurses for the Poor and the congregation’s co-founder, Rev. Edward McGrath msc. Her predecessor, Rev. Mother Theresa (Cissie) McLaughlin, was nominated for the same honour in 1965 but sadly died before it could be bestowed. May and Cissie were among the seven foundation nurses at Our Lady’s Home, Coogee.
