27 March 1952. The Catholic Weekly reports that Mrs. M. Mungovan and her committee are organising an appeal for clothing and comforts to assist the work of Our Lady’s Nurses for the Poor. Volunteers will accept parcels at Legion House, 161 Castlereagh Street, between 10 am and 4 pm on Thursday 1 May. Appeals such as this see thousands of items donated for distribution by the nurses every year. Mrs Mungovan’s committee is one of several fund-raising bodies that originated in the late 1920s and continued for decades. This image from the late 1950s shows Sisters Lucy Mackay, May McGahey and Peggy Shead selecting clothes for needy families at Our Lady’s Home, Brisbane.
